We are Leda and Matt Langley. We started our greenhouse plant business in 1996 in our backyard in a Ballard rental. Our first 10 x 13-foot greenhouse was constructed of windows salvaged from the Phinney Neighborhood Center.
We sold plants at the Fremont Farmers’ Market where we met garden writers from the Seattle Times and Northwest Garden News. As stories appeared in those publications, interest grew and we were approached by local retail nurseries about supplying plants.
Our first accounts were Swanson’s, Fremont Gardens, and City People’s. We started to do more Farmers’ Markets: Redmond, Tacoma, Lake City, Phinney Ridge, Columbia City, West Seattle, and the University District.
Soon after, we were invited to sell at plant sales hosted by the Arboretum Foundation and Master Gardeners. We made the move to Vashon Island in 1998 after finding a five-acre plot covered in blackberry and Scotch Broom, but no house or any other structures.
Weekends spent clearing the property made room for a small house and the first greenhouse. More greenhouses were built at a rate of one or two per year for the next few years. In 2005 we attained our current size of six small greenhouses, and after adding the U-Pick Pumpkin Patch in 2009, we had about three acres under cultivation.
